How many bird species can you identify from this collection of feathers?
This is a painting of feathers I collected while living at Hill Country Aviaries, LLC, between 1999 and 2000. They are painted life-size in watercolor/gouache on paper. The original image is 23"W x 30" H.
I had the privilege of feeding and taking care of all the birds and learned a lot about species I had never worked with previously. At the time I painted these feathers, Archaeopteryx was the oldest known bird ancestor, and I used the iconic fossil image to visually link all the feathers together. Original SOLD

Baby Catalina Macaw - (Ara ararauna x Ara macao) Copyright by Lyrae Perry 2014
I love baby macaws at this age. The pin feathers are just starting to open and they look like they've got a little crew-cut. They're smiling when they open their beak. So darned cute!

Cool Drink - Male Plumheaded Parakeet (Psittacula Cyanocephala)
Copyright by Lyrae Perry 2014
There's no argument that Plumheads are one of the feathered jewels in the bird world. This is the species that forever changed my life in the early 1970's when I bought my first pair for $35 each, and became a serious aviculturist. In those days, there were few people who'd even seen these birds, let alone had the knowledge to raise them. I made it my mission to know everything about raising these gorgeous birds.
Plumheaded parakeets belong to the same genus as the Indian ringnecks, and as my knowledge grew about this genus, so did my bird collection. I specialized in raising nine of the 11 species in the world that belong to the Psittacula genus. These birds are native to South East Asia, India and Sri Lanka. The head, neck and rump have an overlay of pale iridescent blue and in the sun, the rainbow of colors are so bright they almost hurt your eyes to look at them.
This adult male is standing on the rocks in a cool stream drinking, and is the first of a series I'm doing on the genus of birds that have shaped my life and now my art. This plumhead's tail is slightly curved, which tells me that it's breeding season and he's been in a nest hole quite a bit...no doubt feeding his mate and the chicks.

"Do I Know You?" - Red Fronted Macaw Head Study - Copyright by Lyrae Perry 2012
Ara rubrogenys Lafresnaye- One of the rarer macaws, indigenous to Bolivia. They are a little smaller than a Blue and Gold macaw, but not as small as the mini macaws. While Red Fronted macaws are very attractive, they are not suitable as a pet bird, As they are so rare, they are best placed in well managed breeding programs to maintain the limited gene pool in captivity.
The Red Fronted Macaw Conservation project is working to help save this critically endangered species. The wild population has been estimated to be about 1,000 individuals only. The main threats of the Red-fronted Macaw are illegal trapping for the pet trade, habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture and extreme overgrazing by goats, and persecution as a crop pest (as natural food plants are increasingly scarce, birds often resort to crops such as peanuts and corn for food especially outside the breeding season)
To learn more about it, and help save these birds, please visit the Chirping Central page for the Red Fronted Macaw Conservation Project : https://chirpingcentral.site-ym.com

Spix's Macaws - Copyright Lyrae Perry 2000
These are young birds - the original is painted in watercolor/gouache and is 8" x 10" and is one of the most well recognized paintings of this species, thanks to the American Federation of Aviculture CITES Committee. It was originally created to raise awareness of the plight of the last Spix's macaw in the wild, and to help generate funds through the sale of prints and a collector lapel pin for the AFA CITES committee.

Indian Ringneck Parakeets - Two Beautiful Mutations -Copyright by Lyrae Perry 1999
Commissioned artwork. Watercolor/gouache 11" x 14". This is a painting of the Yellow Head,Yellow Tail mutation (green and yellow bird), and the blue version of the same mutation. These mutations occur naturally in the wild, and are brought into captivity where aviculturists work with the birds to establish the mutation in captive flocks. This is a long process and the very pretty and desirable blue mutation is the result of decades of work.

Red Crested Touraco - Graphica - Copyright 2012 by Lyrae Perry
This is a more graphic style than the original painting, and I love the pointillism stylization for this image. The realistically rendered eye brings life to this bird.

Mynah Bird & Pekin Robin
Image created for Sun Seed. These are two of my favorite bird species. They used to be common in American aviculture and we don't see them very often anymore. Mynah's are renown for their talking ability and were frequently kept as pet birds prior to the 1980's. Pekin Robins are found all over Southeast Asia, and are known for their singing ability. Watercolor/gouache 9" x 12".

Scarlet Macaws - Copyright by Lyrae Perry 1996
The original is an oil on canvas, 20" x 24". I wanted to capture the brilliant primary colors on these birds as they fed on the fruits of a palm in the wild.

Rainforest Blue & Gold Macaw - Copyright by Lyrae Perry 2010
The original is painted in oil and is 16" x 20". Commissioned artwork. There's nothing like the richness of oil paint to capture the brilliant color and depth of feathers, fur and skin. It's still my favorite media, even though I do a lot of work in watercolor/gouache which is very linear and highly suited to fine details. Large paintings are nearly always done in oil, and the smaller ones typically are in watercolor/gouache.

Call Ducks - Copyright by Lyrae Perry 1995
Call Ducks are the most delightful birds and you'd never know that unless you had the opportunity to have them. They are quite small, come in several standard colors and are not often seen. My three adult birds followed me around the farm like puppies. They slept on the back porch, waiting for me to greet them in the morning and then off they'd go to swim in the pond.
This is a portrait of one of the females with her chicks on my pond, and part of my personal collection. Original is an oil on canvas 16" x 20".

"Gumby" - A very special Indian Ringneck Parakeet - Copyright by Lyrae Perry 1995
Commissioned artwork of an incredible pet Indian Ringneck. Gumby talked as well as any Amazon parrot
and was every bit as smart as "Alex" the African Grey parrot. He even helped the firemen find him when
the house caught on fire by continuously calling to them from the bedroom closet, saying "Come here!"
Original SOLD
Prints no longer available for this image. I will be happy to paint your pet though!

African Yellow Faced Parrot - Copyright by Lyrae Perry 1999
African Yellow Faced Parrot - Artwork Copyrighted by Lyrae Perry 1999 - Illustration for "African Parrots" by Rick Jordan & Jean Pattison. Watercolor gouache. This is a rare species that few people have had the privilege of seeing. It looks like an Amazon parrot at first glance, but closer study makes it apparent that it's not a South American species, and the feathers are similar to a Jardin's parrot. To my knowledge and the best recollection of experts, this species has never been imported to the US. This illustration is one of two done for the book. The other image was of the equally rare Black Collared Lovebird.
