"Maleficent's Garden" is my new series of botanical art. The series was inspired by one of my favorite Disney villains and features unique and sometimes bizarre plants, along with appropriate visitors you might find in Maleficent's private garden. The plants, insects, bugs and small animals are as they actually appear in nature. I didn't have to make anything up!
Maleficent's Garden artworks introduce the viewer to the unusual, the beautiful and the slightly creepy! This is a walk down a garden path you won't want to miss.

"Agave potaturum 1" This agave is a simple and dramatic plant. The leaf paddles are pale blue and reflect the surrounding light softly and beautifully. The little ghosts on each leaf are pressure marks created by the tight hug of the leaves as the plant grows. The top edges of the leaves are protected by a shiny wood. The spines are strong, sharp, reddish and slightly undulating. They remind me of Maleficent's head dress.
This artwork is a watercolor/gouache on Arches paper, 140 # hot press, fine grain.
Original 23" W x 18.75" H
Original Price: $ 3,200.00
Limited Edition prints in any size on paper or canvas available by special order.

Close-up showing the tiny male Blue Damselfly, perching on the edge to warm himself in the sun on a cool morning. These are not dragon flies, but they are related and just as interesting. Damselflies and Dragonflies are dimorphic, meaning you can visually tell the difference between males and females.

Bromeliads are well known plants from the rainforest with stiff leaves and small sharp spines on the edges. They are typically found growing in the crotches of tall trees and are nurseries for insects and poison dart frogs. When viewed from the side, the plant has an animal-like stripe, similar to a zebra or tiger. The design is no accident. At the very least, it provides a clear message to birds and animals of all types that water is available in the center "well". The pattern of lines and propeller shape of the stiff white leaves optically invite and lead the observer to come closer for a look into the deep center. The plants benefit from visitors who inadvertently bring nutrients and the plant in turn provides a drink for them,
I really liked the bird's eye view of this plant because it reminds me of the op-art from the 1960's. This angle is rarely painted, but commonly seen if you've ever had a bromeliad. The color of the paint is is a mix of browns, rich rusts, olive greens, cool blues, and a rainbow of whites.
The original artwork is 17.5" W x 22.5" H , watercolor/gouache on 300# Arches paper.
Original Price: $2,800.00.
Limited Edition prints available on paper or canvas in any size, by special order.

There are two print versions of "Rain Forest Op-Art" - one with the Ghost Glass Frog and one without.
This is a close up of the little Ghost Glass Frog (that little bit of creepy) that is hand painted on the canvas prints for those who want the embellishment - which is true to the Maleficent's Garden series concept.
The original artwork does not have the Ghost Glass Frog, but if you wish to purchase the original, and want the frog, I'll be happy to paint him in for you!
Blood Spot Agave - Night Copyright by Lyrae Perry 2014
The Blood Spot agave is a hybrid between two very different plants....Agave macroacantha & Manfreda maculosa -- often called Mangave bloodspots.
When you see this little plant in the daylight, the color looks like a soft dusty green. It's not until you look up close that you see the variations in the color of the spines along the edges of the leaves that you can really appreciate how beautiful this hybrid really is.
I photographed the plants in daylight and at night with moonlight and found that both were so different that I had to paint two paintings of the same plant to capture the color variations.
The original price is $2,900.00

Tequila Sunset - Agave salmiana x ferox, "Green Goblet" - copyright by Lyrae Perry 2015
The wild-type agave is all green, but the purple and blue at the base on this plant is actually a naturally occurring color mutation that was discovered in Mexico.
I found this incredible agave in the shade of some oak trees in a neighbor's garden in Dripping Springs, Texas. It was struggling to reach the sunlight, bending backwards and showing the stress with fluorescent yellow displayed on the central cone. The colors were eye-popping and I rushed home to start painting right away.
The artwork is on a full sheet of 300# Arches cold press paper, 22.5" x 30", watercolor/gouache.
The original price is $4,200.00

That "little bit of creepy" in this artwork is the peach beetle searching the leaf litter for something to eat. I love the look of these iridescent beetles, they're like little jewels.
Dendrobates tinctorius - Poison Dart Frogs copyright by Lyrae Perry 1995
Poison dart frogs are one of my favorite subjects to paint because the colors are just amazing! Most of these rainforest amphibians are tiny... about 1/2 inch or less! Their vivid colors are a message to other animals : "don't eat me - I'm poisonous" What's really interesting is that the frogs don't generate the poison themselves. The poison comes from the bugs they eat, and the poison is transported from the gut to skin. The captive poison dart frogs are not deadly because they are not consuming the same food as they would be in the wild.
