Something in the Air... - Copyright Lyrae Perry 2011
Utah Gila Monster tasting the evening air. I love the variety of patterns on all the beaded lizards. There are a lot of myths about Gila Monsters and Beaded Lizards which has contributed to the demise of many individuals. They are a protected species and are really fascinating. Venomous, which you can tell by the color and markings. They aren't aggressive, and spend much of their life, unseen in burrows.

Something in the Air - Solar Charged Series - Copyright Lyrae Perry 2011
Nevada Gila monster tasting the evening air. Can you see the perfect arrow on the back of this animal? This was the actual pattern of this living individual Gila monster ! The Gila monster in this painting is painted in a realistic style, but the background has been changed up to a more abstract version as a nod to Las Vegas.
The adaptations and variety in Gila monsters and beaded lizards is exciting to me as a student of the natural world and as an artist. These animals are found as far North and West as Southern Nevada, Arizona, Mexico, and all the way to the Yucatan peninsula. The color and markings tell us where they come from. The patterns range from dramatic to subtle depending on the environment they live in. I am very excited to be working on this new series of beaded lizards of the Southwest. I will be posting the new works periodically, so stay tuned!
Watercolor/gouache/metallic acrylic on paper, 7.25" x 13".

Heritage - Blue Collared Lizard Female - Copyright Lyrae Perry 1998
This painting is all about the the future...symbols-the Indian corn, the vessel and the gravid female Blue Collared lizard. Females get bright orange spots when they are gravid. The colors are a warning to predators that she is poisonous. Like the Viceroy butterfly mimics the colors of it's poisonous cousin, the Monarch butterfly, this small lizard uses warning colors to deceive predators, preserve her life and the next generation she carries.

Surinam Poison Dart Frog - Copyright Lyrae Perry 1994
While still small by comparison to a Spade footed toad, this is one of the largest of the poison dart frogs. The light blue and purple on this frog are brilliant.
